What an Instagram share link actually contains

Copying a link from Instagram appends an igsh identifier, and older links carry igshid. Both encode who shared the post rather than which post it is, so the link you send can be traced back to you. Here is the same post before and after cleaning.

Cleaned

https://www.instagram.com/p/C8xK2LtvQ9z/

The post identifier C8xK2LtvQ9z is the only part that decides what opens. Everything after the question mark describes the share, not the post, so it can all come off. Facebook links behave the same way with mibextid, and Threads links with rdid.

What this removes from Instagram and Facebook links

This table is generated from the cleaning rules themselves, so it always matches what the tool actually does. These rules are scoped to Meta's domains because the tokens are short enough to collide with real parameters elsewhere. They apply on top of the site-wide rules, which already strip igshid, utm_source, fbclid and around sixty other trackers wherever they appear.

Applies to: facebook.com, instagram.com, fb.com, fb.watch, threads.net

Cleaning, sanitizing, scrubbing — the same job

Searches for an Instagram link cleaner, a way to remove the identifier from an Instagram link, a Facebook link scrubber, or how to sanitize Instagram links all describe one operation: deleting the query parameters that identify you as the sharer, while leaving the part that identifies the post. This page does that operation.

You do not need an app or an extension for it. The cleaning runs as JavaScript on this page, against rules that ship with the page, so there is no request to a server carrying your link and nothing to install. If you would rather see every rule that exists rather than just the Meta ones, the main URL Cleaner lists them all.

Questions about cleaning Instagram links

What is igsh in an Instagram link?

igsh is the share identifier Instagram appends when you copy a link. It encodes the share itself rather than the post, which is why two people sharing the same post produce different values. Removing it does not change which post opens.

What is the difference between igsh and igshid?

igshid is the older identifier and igsh is its replacement. Both are removed — igshid by the site-wide rules that apply everywhere, igsh by the Meta rules scoped to Instagram, Facebook and Threads domains.

Does this work on Facebook and Threads links too?

Yes. The same rule set covers facebook.com, fb.com, fb.watch, instagram.com and threads.net, so mibextid on a Facebook link and rdid on a Threads link are removed the same way.

Will the cleaned link still open the right post?

Yes. The post identifier lives in the path, not the query string, so removing the tracking parameters leaves the link pointing at exactly the same post, reel or profile.

Is the link sent anywhere?

No. The cleaning happens in your browser using rules that are part of this page. Your link is never transmitted to a server, and no account is required.

The main URL Cleaner applies every rule this tool has — the site-wide trackers plus the platform-specific ones for Meta, YouTube and Amazon — and shows the full parameter reference.
