What a YouTube share link actually contains

Every link the YouTube share sheet produces carries a si parameter. It encodes the sharing session, which means the link you send can be traced back to you as the sender. Here is the same video before and after cleaning.

From the share sheet

https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?si=kXm2_9QpLr4Bv1Zt&t=42

Cleaned

https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ?t=42

The si token is gone and t=42 survives, so the recipient still lands at 42 seconds. That distinction is the whole point: a cleaner that strips your timestamp has not cleaned the link, it has broken it. The same handling applies to youtube.com/watch links, youtu.be short links and youtube-nocookie.com embeds.

What this removes from YouTube links

This table is generated from the cleaning rules themselves, so it always matches what the tool actually does. These rules apply on top of the site-wide ones, which already strip utm_source, fbclid, gclid and around sixty other trackers wherever they appear.

Applies to: youtube.com, youtu.be, youtube-nocookie.com

What it keeps on purpose

These parameters look like clutter but decide what the viewer actually sees. Removing them would hand someone a link that opens the wrong thing, so they are protected by default.

Cleaning, sanitizing, scrubbing — the same job

Searches for a YouTube link cleaner, a YouTube link sanitizer, a YouTube tracking link remover, or simply how to remove tracking from a YouTube link all describe one operation: deleting the query parameters that identify you or the surface you shared from, while leaving the ones that identify the video and the position in it. This page does that operation.

You do not need an extension for it. The cleaning runs as JavaScript on this page, against rules that ship with the page, so there is no request to a server carrying your link and nothing to install. If you would rather see every rule that exists rather than just the YouTube ones, the main URL Cleaner lists them all.

Questions about cleaning YouTube links

What is the si parameter in a YouTube link?

si is a share token that YouTube appends to every link generated by its share sheet. It encodes the sharing session rather than the video, which is why two people sharing the same video produce different si values. Removing it does not change which video opens.

Will removing tracking break the timestamp or playlist?

No. t, start, list and index are classified as essential and kept by default, because they change what the viewer actually sees. Only the tracking parameters are removed.

Can I just delete everything after the question mark?

Often, but not always. On a plain video link that works. On a link with a timestamp or a playlist position, deleting everything after the question mark also deletes the part you wanted to share. The tool makes that distinction for you.

Does this work on youtu.be and embed links?

Yes. The YouTube rules apply to youtube.com, youtu.be and youtube-nocookie.com, so short links and privacy-enhanced embed links are handled the same way.

Is the link sent anywhere?

No. The cleaning happens in your browser using rules that are part of this page. Your link is never transmitted to a server, and no account is required.

The main URL Cleaner applies every rule this tool has — the site-wide trackers plus the platform-specific ones for YouTube, Meta and Amazon — and shows the full parameter reference.
